Fiddle De Dee, Come Buy Some Beers From Me

9/28/2016

Hello again! We return from the aether once more, this time bearing news of fun times and music and snacks!

First off, a big thanks to everyone who came out to our empanada event this past Thursday! We had some tasty brews and some delicious munchables and we raised some money for a good cause! Good times all around! And if you missed it, never you fret - we're lookin' to put together some similar events in the future, so it's nigh-on likely that you too will be able to do some good just by drinkin' beers on a weekday. Keep your eyes peeled!
And in near-future-news, we'll be doing another tasting and growler pop-up, this time at Wine Press in Brookline! We'll be samplin' beers and talkin' shop and high fivin' from six until eight this Thursday (September 29th) so come on by and taste some tastes and grab a growler!

Mucho thanks to @eckerpower for photographing this extraordinarily accurate depiction of our thoughts on growlers (those thoughts being: "Hooray! Growlers!")
And while we're on the topic of fun events, it's high time we remind you about our upcoming Original Gravity show! Original Gravity - for those of you not "in the know" and/or "in need of a refresher" - is a concert series pairs modern composers with local breweries, and we're hosting a show on Thursday October 27th! And (partly/entirely due to the... "cozy" nature of our taproom) that show will consist of a series of solo performers, and (completely unrelated to our size restrictions) we'll be brewin' up a special batch or two to pair with the music! There's a farmhouse ale brewed with ginger that's in the works for the event, and we'll be bringing back an old favorite of ours (and, from what people have been telling us, a new favorite of yours as well) at the same time! Tasty times, indeed. We've been to a number of these shows in the past, and they're very well put together - and since space is limited (again with the coziness), there ain't many tickets, so you'd best grab one before it's too late!

We've got it on good authority there's going to be a gong solo... make of that what you will, but we're excited!
But wait! There's more! The day after the OG concert, we're hosting a Jaju Pierogi pop-up! We've heard nothing but good things about these folks from our friends over at Gentile Brewing, but - to be perfectly honest - we were sold the minute we heard "pierogi and beer." Tentative menu includes kielbasa and red pepper, potato and cheese, sweet potato and caramelized onion, and cabbage and mushroom. Pierogi goes great with beer, so come on out and nosh until you plotz!

Facebook event: Jaju Pierogi Pop Up
Picture
Look at these little nuggets of Polish goodness! We can't wait!
And the fun for that weekend doesn't stop there (why would it?)! The day after our pierogi pop up, we're throwin' a Halloween-type shindig with our neighbors Night Shift Brewing and Short Path Distillery! We're still working out some of the finer details, but mark your calendars for Saturday 10/29 from 6-11pm! There will be adult trick-or-treating from fermentorium to fermentorium, complete with food trucks, beer and candy pairings, specialty cocktails, and activities at each business! Stay tuned!
And speaking of eats: if you've been by the taproom lately,* or read about the events we've been hosting, or even if you've been in the same room as the two of us for any length of time (particularly if beer is involved), you may have noticed that there's one thing that's almost as near and dear to our hearts as good ol' beer, and that thing is snacks. And with that in mind, we'd like to mention the fact that our snack selection in the taproom has started expanding - and it's gonna start getting a bit (more) eclectic in the near future! In addition to our Sunday Afternoon Pretzel-and-Cupcake-Extravaganza, we've had (locally made) Q's Nuts since day one,** and we've recently added Kalahari Biltong (also locally made) as a much-needed dried meat option. And considering our lack of a kitchen,*** that does put us well on our way to having our snack bases covered,**** but we're always on the hunt for new (preferably locally made) snackables - so if you've got a suggestion or a lead, drop us a line and we'll work on gettin' more good eats in your hands!
Picture
We had one customer this weekend who, upon hearing we offer free snacks with a flight, uttered incredulously under his breath, "no fuckin' way." Best. Reaction. Ever.
* Since we pretty much just opened, "lately" can be interpreted as "at all."
** And they've become pretty popular since we remembered that we need to tell people that we have them.
*** We will almost definitely be working with the Village Bar & Grill when they open up, but it's seeming like they've also received the Curse of Norman Street, and are in the same sort of "hopefully opening soon... if we can" limbo that plagued us for months and months.
**** Pretzels? Check. Dried and salted meats? Check. Fruit snacks that you thought they stopped making twenty years ago? Check. Fried lard? Pending.

The Overall Highs and Occasional Lows of Running This Silly Little Brewery

9/21/2016

Well hello there! We had us a rollicking* end to one hell of a first month in business, and now we're here to yammer about it! Village Fest was - as expected - an incredible success. A whole heckin' bunch** of people came out and we made a gaggle of new friends and met a lot of thirsty people. It was a durn good event, if we do say so ourselves, and we're lookin' forward to it again next year!
The only change we would make would be to have a dedicated candy runner to make sure the outdoor bar has a steady supply of sweets.
And speaking of thirsty people: a big street festival combined with an... exuberant first few weeks means that y'all drank a couple of our lines dry! We had a temporary shortage of Wasted Life (it's back now, but that was a scary day and a half), a brief kibosh on Key Lime White (we had to squirrel away a few kegs for this week's empanada tasting, but it'll be back on for real by Saturday), and we're now entirely out of Thrasher and Ohm!*** We're sad to see those last two go, and judging from how fast those kegs kicked we should bring back Ohm as soon as we can! Although if we do, we'll need to give it a new name, as it was recently pointed out to us (quite politely, I might add) that there's a very well-respected (by us in particular) local brewer who makes a beer with a strikingly similar name. So we gon' have to call it something different**** in the future because we sure as hell ain't wanna rile up our neighbors. We like our neighbors!
Picture
Here's to the TBD IPA!
But speaking of empanadas, in case you were unaware: we're doing a beer and empanada event this Thursday 9/22! Tickets are mostly sold out, so you may wanna act quickly (although we have it on reasonably good authority that there will be a few more available at the door). It'll be a good time, and proceeds go to benefit the Everett Farmers Market! And, as an added bonus, (the sauce on the empanada, as it were), there's a shuttle running between Bone Up and Wellington Station from six until nine! Cool! Anything that spares you a modestly sketchy walk down Revere Beach Parkway is a good thing in our book.

Tickets on Eventbrite: $29

And! If you can't make it out on Thursday, we've got the Bone Town Burgers truck rockin' steady this Friday night at the taproom, and if you're in the Brookline area late next week, we'll be slingin' samples and growlers over at Wine Press Brookline! Come say hello!

The first of many scrumptious snacking shebangs!
And lastly, we have some moderate bummer news. For months now, we've been planning on brewing a wet hop beer with hops from Four Star Farms. But after getting all stoked about it and telling everybody who would listen, things went awry. Basically, the weather screwed us over a little bit: they can't harvest when it's raining, and it was raining on the planned brewday. Under other circumstances, we could have rescheduled, except that a) we only have one day of the week available, and 2) harvesting takes less than a week. And we can't go with a different hop because our preferred variety is the last one to be harvested, so this was the last chance. But now's not the time to point fingers (except at the weather. Stupid jerk weather). It's a bummer, but we're pressin' on - we had a pretty cool base beer planned (a light 'n' malty ale featuring grains from Blue Ox), so we got that goin' on instead, only this time it's brewed with regular ol' dried and pelletized hops just like we usually use.
Picture
Gon' be a good beer, durn tootin'
* That's right - "rollicking." Bet it's been a while since you've seen that word outside a movie poster (most likely the movie in question would be a badly-acted screwball comedy, or perhaps something involving Mr. Bean).
** Over six thousand, according to that carnie we talked to.
*** Don't you start frettin', though - we already have some delightful new beers fermentin' away to take over those lines.
**** We don't have a replacement name just yet, though you could make a fairly strong case that we never had a real name in the first place, since we just got lazy used the production shorthand for the recipe as the original moniker.

Festivals! Mayors! Hot Dogs! Bounce House!

9/14/2016

Howdy ho! We're three weeks in, with a whole bunch more to go; there's been a lot goin' on, and we got more to report, don't'cha know!

For starters, we got paid a visit by none other than the friggin' mayor! There was a podium and heartfelt speeches about how great Everett is and a ribbon cutting* and a TV crew to fully capture us in all of our awkward splendor. And we got an Official Citation! We were pretty stoked about this once we realized that the citation didn't involve the word "traffic" or any fines (instead it was printed and framed up quite nicely).
Picture
And part** of the reason that our Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was this week is that Village Fest is comin' up! Just to refresh your memory - Village Fest is when the city shuts down our street (Norman St. and/or Santilli Hwy, depending on which part you're on) and there are food trucks and outdoor drinking and bands and free hot dogs*** and a bounce house!

It's sure to be a bustlin' good time for all, though there are a couple things worth mentioning. Firstly, we can't open until the fest starts at
3:00 PM - so if you need to get your Bone Up in the early afternoon instead of waiting until the mid afternoon, you'd be advised to plan ahead and grab a growler on Friday. We'll be open from noon to eleven PM, as always, and this week we're rockin' with the Roving Lunchbox hand pie truck from 5-9pm!

And speaking of growlers, we won't be selling any to-go beer while the festival is goin' on (for liability reasons. We'll also be serving in plastic cups for similar reasons, which means flights won't really be an option).

Check out all the details for the fest here: Village Fest 2016
Picture
And speaking of beers, we've got a new release comin' up this Friday, as well as a couple new-ish releases that we just plumb forgot to mention on this ol' blog, so here's the stats and info on those bad mamma jammas:
Picture
Teamaker, Single Hop Pale Ale, 5.2%
Teamaker is a cool little hop that we wanted to get better acquainted with, so we threw a shitload of it (maybe even two shitloads) into a nice, medium-bodied pale ale! We're still getting to know the beer, but these woody, floral aromas are keepin' us bendin' our elbows every time we pour a pint for "research purposes." Debuting this Friday in the taproom!
Picture
OHM, Throwback IPA, 5.5%
Sometimes you just gotta have an old-school citrus-and-pine IPA, so we took some Classic American Hops, chucked them in the kettle,
and mixed in just a *pinch* of Bone Up Magic. We ain't gonna strip the enamel off your teeth, but we are gonna give you a solid beer for solid times. Enjoy it now in the taproom while it lasts, or go grab a pour from our friends at Mystic Station or Rosebud Kitchen!
Picture
Redeemer, Dark Mild, 3.1%
Woke up Sunday morning, not a way to hold your head that doesn't hurt? Drink this beer for breakfast, and maybe have another one for dessert... Barely over three percent but still packin' loads of flavor, Redeemer's a little nutty and just the right amount of roasty. This guy is super smooth-sippin' and lets you keep the party goin' while you redeem yourself from the sins of the previous night (just make sure to wear your cleanest dirty shirt).
And. And! We're expanding our taproom hours! Again! Y'all seem to dig on kickin' back with a pint or three on Sunday evenings, and we'll be damned if we ain't gon' letcha! Our taproom is now open and servin' up suds until eight o'clock on Sundays, and - as always - we'll have fresh-baked pretzels (and usually a handful of other goodies) from Fat Boyfriend Bakery! So if you're lookin' to have a relaxing evening as you perpetually push away any thoughts of your impending work week, come on out and grab a beer!
Picture
* Though, sadly, they did not bring along comically large ceremonial scissors. They just used the regular type (though considering how sharp they weren't, some jokester may have snuck in a pair of kids' safety scissors, which would be pretty funny).
** The other part being that we just opened a couple weeks ago.
*** Yes, really. In our parking lot, in fact! If you're lucky, they might even be cooked.

Hooo-Wee, Do We Have Some Fun Things Planned!

9/7/2016

Well hey there, cats and kittens! Bone Up has remained a whirlwind of frenzied motion over the past week or so, what with all the slingin' suds and servin' snacks and brewin' beers and good times all around! It's been such a flurry of activity (though much of the thrilled-to-be-open-related prancing has slowed a bit) that we forgot to tell you about all the cool events we got comin' up! But that's a problem we can fix, so we gon' do that right here right now.

First and foremost, we have a tasting/growler popup at Social Wines this Thursday, September 8! We're back at our homefield beer store, and this time we mean business (and by "business" I mean "tasty beers," which is really just business as usual). So if you're in the area (or if you're not in the area but you really need to getcha some Bone Up on a Thursday night), come on by and say hi and try some of our flagships and some taproom-only* beers!
Picture
Next up is next Saturday (the 17th), when we're thrilled to say we'll be at Village Fest! For those of you not in the know, Village Fest is a bigass street festival with food trucks and bands** and city-sanctioned outdoor drinkin'! And we have it on good authority that there's also gonna be a bounce house! The street is gonna be shut down from Teddie Peanut Butter all the way down to our humble abode, and we'll be joining our neighbors (Short Path, Night Shift, and Down the Road) pouring some beers outside! The festival runs from 3 until 9, and it's worth noting that we won't (can't) be open outside those hours that day. So if you were planning on comin' out and having a quiet pint and/or growler fill, you'd be advised to schedule around that.

Facebook Event Page: Village Fest 2016
Picture
All these lovely beverage producers will be pouring festival-style all down the street to suit your free-range drinkin' needs! We're not sure what Teddie's going to be up to, but we sure hope it involves five gallon buckets of peanut butter.
And hot on the heels of that fun-filled afternoon, we've got some more good times planned! As you may have noticed, we're pretty big fans of snacks around these parts - truth be told, they're one of our biggest non-beer priorities. So with that in mind, we're stoked as heck to say that we're partnering with Craft Brew England to do a beer and empanada tasting on Thursday, September 22! We'll be serving up empanadas filled with meats marinated in Bone Up Brews, and proceeds go to the Everett Farmers Market! So if you wanna come out and snack on snacks and drink some drinks, all in support of a good cause, grab yourself a ticket while the gettin' is good!

Pictured: research. Delicious, delicious research.
And THEN, a little further down the road (October 27th, to be precise), we'll be hosting an Original Gravity concert! We'd been in talks with these fine folks for quite a while now, so it's pretty durn exciting that we finally get to work with them! A little background: Original Gravity is a concert series that pairs beers brewed by local breweries (and at least one cider house in the past) with music composed by local composers, which means we'll have a night of high-class tunes and some fresh new beers to pair them with! And since our space is... cozy at the best of times, there are a limited number of tickets*** available, so you might wanna scoop 'em up sooner rather than later if you're lookin' to get your flute on next month.

Picture
We've got it on good authority there's going to be a... gong solo?
That's all for events (for now), but we'd once again like to offer a sincere Thank You to everybody who came out to our taproom over the weekend. We met some cool-as-hell people, and a bunch of y'all said you've been reading this ridiculous blog of ours for a while now and that is just completely, unbelievably incredible. This has been a labor of love, for sure (heavy on the labor), and we can't even express how cool it is to meet people who have been rooting for us as we've been getting started. And if you haven't already, come on by the taproom and say hi, we'd love to meet you!
* Well, they're mostly only available in the taproom, but "taproom-mostly" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
** The headliner is Eve 6, who, in the interest of full disclosure, we really only know from that one song that's definitely gonna get stuck in your head as soon as you go look it up.
*** And for what it's worth, all of the performers are soloists. It's not like we'll be cramming an orchestra into our tiny taproom (though that would be funny).
