Success!

Wow.

Holy shit.

That just happened.
Picture
Admittedly, the banner would have been a lot funnier had our landlord not done a spectacular job tidying up our half of the parking lot (it's waaaay less shady now!), but we couldn't resist this reference after all we've been through!
Picture
Special thanks to the friends 'n family that came out and helped drink two styles off the menu before we even opened!
Picture
These people were all here on purpose!
We opened! And it went even better than we dared hope! The taproom was bustlin', the beer flowed like wine, and everybody had a good time!* It's still kind of unbelievable to us - we've spent so long just lurking by ourselves in the fermentation cellars that we almost didn't know what to think when we saw people lining up to drink our beer! But it's basically the best feeling ever - we've been smiling for so long that we're starting to get sore (and incidentally, if you're constantly wearing a wide-eyed shit-eating grin, you usually get a seat all by yourself on the bus no matter how crowded it is).
And, of course, we have a jillion people to thank for this unrivaled success. First and foremost are the latest additions to the Bone Up Crew - Ben and Nic - who started out their tenure here with a heapin' helpin' of Trial By Fire, and they handled it like friggin' champs! And let's not forget our slightly-less-official crew members: Catyie and John and Steph, who were instrumental in ensuring that things ran like clockwork (or as close as we get to "clockwork" around here).

And that's not all! The fine folks over at Bit Bar were generous enough to loan us some games to make the wait bearable (sorry kids - those ain't permanent), and as the icing on the cake Bonetown Burgers had some delicious eats for y'all!
Picture
It pays to have neighbors who hoard old-school games.
Picture
It's the beginning of a bone-tiful friendship (sorry Jared).
It was one hell of a day, is what we're getting at, and we very much appreciate the efforts of everybody who made it such a success.

So if you made it out to try some tasty beers - thank you for coming out! We were/are overwhelmed and overjoyed with the sheer number of people that wanted to come out to our weird little brewery and drink our beers! We've put a lot of ourselves into this place** over the past weeks/months/years, and we are just pleased as pie that y'all like coming here and drinking our beers!
Picture
That's it. We're starting a table art Wall O' Fame.
Picture
Flights are meant to be shared! Photo credit @jilldanielle.
But enough about opening day. That joyous occasion is in the past, and we must look forward, not backward. As some of you may have heard/noticed/experienced, we made a last-minute, largely-unannounced decision to be open on Sunday (and we had tasty fresh-baked pretzels). So I guess we're open on Sundays now!*** With baked goods! Cool!
Picture
We're peddlin' soft pretzels from Fat Boyfriend Bakery in Malden! They're delivered to the taproom fresh from the oven, and even come with Extra Naked beer cheese! Hell yes.
And speaking of us being open for more hours, we're looking to expand our front-of-house team. So if you or anybody you know is looking to work for the coolest brewery around, then I don't know what to tell you because they probably aren't hiring. But if you/they wanna work for us dorks, check out our new Jobs page and/or drop us a line!

And! There's more! We've got a new beer that's gonna be released this weekend! It's an IPA whose Secret Details will be revealed as soon as we remember to update the damn beers page, so keep your eyes peeled.
Picture
For this beer I feel like we should have some sort of story about harmony and balance and the fundamental interconnectedness between spirituality and electrical engineering, but the name is actually just an acronym for the ingredients we used.
* As far as we could tell, anyway.
** Metaphorically, of course. Though there were a few construction projects that got an accidental blood sacrifice.
***If you do come on Sundays, keep in mind that we
are brewing in the back. It gets a little toasty.

The Frenzy Before the Storm

It's been one heckuva week down here at Bone Up Headquarters and Novelty Snack Emporium, let me tell you. After we finished running around in circles and excitedly squealing about our permits (total estimated time: four days), it dawned on us that we've got a whole heckin' bunch of shit to do before we open on Saturday! For months, we've been shoveling stuff onto lists marked "To Do Later" or "Need to Do Before Opening the Taproom" or, simply, "Probably?" So it's been intense, but we're as close as we're gonna be to what you might call "ready:" our kegs are full, our staff is staffed (more about them later);*
Picture
Our snack bins are brimmin' with goodies;
Picture
Picture
The game shelf is fully stocked and ready to rock and/or sock;
Picture
And the walls are festooned with a whole bunch of weird art that we bought from comic strip artists!
Picture
Picture
We're ready to serve you beer! Life is good!
Picture

And somehow, in the midst of all this craziness, we still made time for the absolute highlight of our brewing year - Brewers' Day at Four Star Farms! As you may well know,** roughly half of the hops we use come from this fine farm in Western Mass,*** partly because we think it's the coolest that we know the people who grow our ingredients (the other reason is that we've been getting some crazy good aromas from their hops).
Picture
Anyway, they invited us out and we got to see their picking machine in action and meet a lot of other brewers and (most importantly) pull hop cones straight off the bine and smell the heck outta that fresh hoppy goodness (a process which left our hands yellow and sticky for the rest of the day)!
Picture
My point is: hop farms are cool and you should go visit one during harvest season if you can (that being said, you will also probably treated to more bragging about dirt than you're normally used to - they are farmers, after all). And amidst all the festivities, there was (of course) a bit of shop talk, which means (of course) that we've got some cool hop-related goodness comin' your way soon!
Picture
Now, if you'll excuse us, we need to go take a nap on top of a grain bag. See you's Saturday!
* Holy heck. We're employers now!
** Or not, since we don't tout that fact as much as maybe we should.
*** Loosely defined as "anything west of Newton."

We Are the Hap-Hap-Happiest Buncha Assholes This Side of the Nuthouse

It's a banner week around here, so I'll cut the usual shuck and jive and get right to the point: we're friggin opening! It's legit and it's official - we've crossed our t's and dotted our lower case j's and now that all our paperwork is in order (well, mostly) - we can finally serve you beer!
There's hell of details to share (the short version is that Opening Day is Saturday August 27th, noon to eleven PM), but first we'd like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to everybody who's helped us get to this point - from family and friends who have provided unthinkable amounts of support (not to mention free labor) over the past months and years, to our somewhat newer friends down at city hall who helped us get this dang place licensed and legit, to everybody out there who helped spread the word about the tiny-ass new brewery that was set to open "hopefully soon" for an interminable amount of time. And Thank You, Dear Reader, for reading our silly-ass blog and listening to us go on and on about a taproom you couldn't visit (or, for those of you who have been with us for a while, a brewery whose beer you couldn't drink). Thank you.

Anyway. Details! Opening! Things! As presented in handy Q&A format because that's easier to write.

When is the taproom opening?
Saturday, August 27th at noon, and we'll be pouring until 11pm!

Will there be food?
Yes indeedy! We don't have a kitchen, but that ain't gonna stop us! On Opening Day we'll have the good folks from Bonetown Burgers parkin' their truck in our lot and servin' up some dang delicious grub. And if you don't feel like walking all the way out to the parking lot (or if you come at some other time), we'll have some small snacks available at the bar.

Is there parking?
We've got a dozen or so spots in the lot, and there are usually plenty of street spots on the weekend!

Are you T-accessible?
Yes! The closest stop is Wellington, which is about a twenty minute walk (ten if you walk like Jimbo).

What are your hours?
For now, we'll just be doing Fridays and Saturdays from noon until eleven, but we'll be expanding that as soon as humanly possible (starting with Sundays, most likey). We're excited to be open as much as possible, but before we can do that we'll probably need to take care of a few minor details like "having staff."

Speaking of staff, are you hiring?
We sure are!* We're looking for people to work some weekend shifts front-of-house, so drop us a line at info@boneup.beer if you're lookin'!

Wait, why aren't you open on Sundays?
Short answer? Because it's summer. We currently brew on Sundays, and even with all our giant ventilation systems, it gets hot as the dickens in there, which ain't exactly a relaxing environment to kick back with a pint. But if y'all really wanna come in and grab some beer on a Sunday, we'll grab some extra fans and get in gear on makin' that a reality!

Do you have outdoor seating?
Not yet, I'm afraid. We're are supposed to be getting a patio at some point, but that won't be around until the beginning of next year's Outdoor Drinkin' Season at the earliest.** As for that lovely, inviting slab o' concrete out front, that's sadly just a Patio Tease. Among other things, that's the only working loading dock for the building and it kind of kills the whole laid-back/non-deadly vibe when a truck drops its lift gate on your table.

Do you have air conditioning?
We unfortunately don't have that yet either (it's been an interesting summer, to say the least), but we are workin' on it! ...

Can I host my private event at your brewery?
If it's after the 27th, and it's not on a weekend, sure! Just drop us a line and we'll figure something out!

If you get the chance, please take a minute to RSVP on our Eventbrite page - we're trying to get any semblance of an idea of how many people to expect. We can't wait to see you there!
* We've had a few people ask in the past, and the answer has always been some variation of "not yet," because we didn't have a set opening date (or income, for that matter), and it's kind of completely Not Cool to say "you're hired, you start at some indeterminate point in the future." But that's all gone and changed now! So even if you've been in touch before, don't hesitate to reach out again if you're interested!
**And based on the turnaround time of other projects in our fair kingdom, even that's pretty optimistic.

In Which We Demonstrate Zeno's Paradox

Hi there, welcome back to our blog! It's been a hella happenin' week around here as always, what with all the beer brewin'* and suds slingin'!** And what's more, we finally got the nice people down at City Hall to swing by and weigh in on whether or not our building is presentable enough to open!
Picture
Working hard to meet the minimum code requirements
Picture
Even the weird, abandoned-looking lobby (complete with empty off-brand drinks machine) is lookin' downright clean 'n airy
And the answer is... Probably! We are, at the very least, a big ol' step closer - after some hemming and a moderate amount of hawing, we got a verbal greenlight from the relevant parties!*** Now, we're hesitant to make a Formal Announcement until we have a real, actual permit in our grubby little paws (since we really don't like making promises we aren't sure we can keep), but still. Holy shit. It's probably real! It's probably happening! We're shifting into Maximum Preparedness mode in anticipation of things going well enough that we'll be able to open soon (so if you're handy with a paintbrush or a feather duster and you've got a few hours you feel like donatin', please drop us a line). So you might be advised not to make any concrete plans for the Saturday at the end of the month. Just in case, of course.
Picture
We've started squirrelin' away our beer for opening day... flights and pints will be waiting for you!

Picture
You wouldn't want to miss bein' one of the first to stomp your feet and clap your hands all up in this taproom!
* Y'all are enjoyin' our beer so much, we're gonna start makin' more of it! As of this week we're increasing production so's we can keep a steady flow of fermentables for you fine folks!
** We - as always - had a grand ol' time pourin' samples for all y'all this week! But maybe next time we won't schedule multiple events on days that we also need to do production work.
*** The planning board and the building department, in this case. We'll still need approval from a small handful of other departments before we'll be able to do
everything we want (because of course we need more permits, why wouldn't we), but those aren't showstoppers.

In Which We Make Sure You Can Taste ALL the Beer

8/2/2016

Hi Kids! It's blog time again! When we left off last week, we were on the cusp of unleashing the remainder of our four flagship beers upon the world - more specifically, we were set to unleash them upon Giles Liquors. And dang but we just had a great ol' time!
Picture
This flattering photo of Jared has been brought to you by the Mass Brew Bros.
And I know I say this about every event we do, but we are just stoked as hell that y'all came out and tried our beer, and we're even more stoked that you liked it! So stoked, in fact, that we're doing another tasting, with the same beers, this week! And two more this weekend! (Click on the pictures for the Facebook events and more details.)
Picture
Craft Beer Cellar Fenway, Thursday, 8/4, 5-7pm

Boston Cannons Presents Lax & Lagers, Saturday, 8/6, 3-4:30pm
Picture
Pemberton Farms, Saturday, 8/6, 6-8pm
In other news, when we last left you* our lot had been freshly paved and we were in the process of trying to figure out what that meant for us vis-à-vis being allowed to use our building for its intended purpose. And now that we're older and wiser (by a week and a smidge, respectively), we've got all of the skinny (but none of the lowdown) on what the deal is, and in short: we're tryin' to get our inspections inspected this week!**
Picture
C'mon, how could a city planner say no?
Picture
We pulled out the red carpet and everythang!
And if everything goes well when the town swings through (and we're hopeful - this place is way less terrifying than it used to be), we should be able to get that permit tootsweet! And once that happens, our plan is to giddily jump around until we get lightheaded and have to lie down, and then spend a week or two furiously dusting*** and polishing and touching up paint in order to have everything spiffy as the dickens for when we finally**** bring y'all in to drink our beer!
* Unless you follow us on the Social Medias, in which case you've already seen the weird suburban jungle that our landlord's landscapers planted in our parking lot.
** We might even be hounding the fine folks down at city hall as you're reading this.

*** We've got three hundred light bulbs in the taproom, each one with six months' worth of construction dust on it, not to mention the bathroom that's been used solely by contractors for a year. Should be fun.
**** FINALLY
