More Beer For Your Mouth!

Well hell and hot dang! It's been another whirlwind week as we keep on brewin' up beer and haulin' it around town for you thirsty folks (with occasional pauses to drink some of said beer). Starting this Friday, we're going to have all four of our inaugural ales out in the wild for you to enjoy, both on draft and in growlers!

Speaking of growlers, we'd like to thank Kappy's (and our friend Rich in particular) for hosting us for a tasting/growler pop-up this past Saturday; I daresay the event was a rousing success! And just as importantly, we'd like to thank everybody who came out to drink and purchase our beer! Having never done one of these events before, we had a bit of a suspicion that the bulk of the people attending the tasting would be confused and/or hungover passers-by who'd never heard of us, but we were wrong! We met a bunch of very nice people who came out just to see lil' ol' us! And dang but that is just the best feeling - we've spent so much of the last few* months with our collective noses to the grindstone that it's just so great to get out there behind the counter, share our beer with you, and watch them faces of yours crack into smiles!
Picture
Cold beers, warmed hearts
Now, while we did sell out of our stash at Kappy's (for now), you can still get your growl on at a select few stores in the Boston area. Look for us in the coolers at City Liquors in East Cambridge and Giles Fine Wine (they have locations in Arlington, Medford, and Woburn), and if you're lookin' for some fresh-filled vessels to celebrate America Day with this weekend, and you're in Boston proper, get your bad selves on over to Social Wines in Southie on Friday, and grab up the growlers we'll be dropping off!
Picture
Picture
Fun fact: if you return your empty growler back to the store you bought it from (Ben at City Liquors is hammin' it up here), they'll give you the deposit back and return the growler to us, which is mighty nice! Or just hang onto that sucker and bring it to the brewery for refills once we're open!
And, since it's been a while, we should get to the Question That's On Everybody's** Mind: when the hell are we gonna open the taproom? And I hope you're looking for a vague answer, because that's the best we can do! When we last talked about this, the dirt hole/pile in our lot had been transformed into a glorious concrete loading dock, and things were lookin' up for gettin' the outside of the building up to code!*** This was a confusing but welcome change of pace for us. But then, as we've grown accustomed to, progress just sort of stopped once things were a little more than halfway done (this happens frequently enough that we now just refer to it as "catching contractor-itis"). To say the least, it's been a bit of a thorn in our collective side,**** so we are making a conscious effort to focus on the positive (making beer! You know, that thing we started this company for?).

But! Things are moving again! We've got railings going in on the dock and the handicap ramp, which means that (once they're done) we'll try to start reopening the "when can we open" conversation with the city!
Picture
Pictured: safety! (looks good though, right?!)
* Does "fifteen" still count as a few?
** Well, everybody that pays attention to the progress at our brewery (both of you).
*** For the record, we're waiting on the go-ahead from the building department, who has some sort of obsession with people being able to get in and out of our building safely. And while we do agree with that viewpoint, we wish it had been explained to us before we got all these pamphlets stressing the importance of regular tetanus shots.

**** You could call it "frustrating" in the same way you could call the moon "sorta far away."

Keg Schleppin' and Beer Tappin'

6/22/2016

Howdy all! It's been one hectic-ass week as we been hustlin' and/or bustlin'* to get our beer out into the world! Jimbo's been pedalin' around peddlin' our fine fermentables, and we've been schleppin' kegs to several of the finer establishments all around this fair city of ours.
Picture
That's some American goodness right there. (Photo courtesy of Maverick Marketplace Cafe)
That's right! We're on tap! We hope some of you have found your way into your local waterin' holes this week and romanced a pint or two of some real-ass Bone Up brew! Since we have a few different styles in our roster, and our accounts are ever-changin',** we've done up a Find Us page on this here site so you can get the most up-to-date info on where to hunt us down. We're delivering more kegs this week, so be sure to keep an eye out for whenever you get thirsty!
Picture
We got some summer in a glass right here - perfect sippin’ for long days and warm nights. This beer is nice and crisply hoppy, balanced out by a fresh pineapple aroma that'll make you start craving the next pint before you've even finished the first one.
Picture
Love a good beer session? We certainly do! Brewed with fistfuls of MA-grown hops and braced with a bready, caramelly malt backbone (also local!), this beer’s got a bit of a body to it, and some dark fruit flavors start to appear as the beer warms up a bit (if it lasts that long).
Picture
This beer is jet black, but don't let the color fool you: our tangy, tenacious dark wheat ale is light-bodied and brewed with orange peel and coriander. Our (admittedly weird) take on a traditional Belgian wit, this little guy is full of (good) surprises.
And, for those of you who prefer to sip your suds in more private environs, we're dippin' our toes into the wonderful world of retail sales and gettin' our growlers (well, growlettes, actually) out to some of the more locally-minded beer stores in the area! Giles Fine Wine is grabbin' most of the rest of our Honey 'n' Hops and Bone Smasher stash tonight, so if you haven't tried some yet, you best get yourself out to one of their several locations! And if that's a bit out of the way for you, City Liquors in Inman Square is grabbin' some growlers while the gettin' is good, so keep an eye on their shelves startin' on Friday!***

And, as you may have heard us mention one or ten times, our friendly neighborhood Kappy's is doin' up a "welcome to the neighborhood" shindig this coming Saturday, and we'll be there to pour up some samples and sell our beer!
Picture
Come watch us try to string words together to describe something we've been doing for years!
"And what of future brews," you ask? Well I'm glad you brought it up! The last of our inaugural one-off brews - Warehouse Ale - will be ready to drink in the very near future - its first public appearance will be at the Kappy's event on Saturday, as a matter of fact. And after that, we're barrelin' straight through into our flagship beers with Key Lime White! That's in the fermentor right now, so keep an eye peeled in the coming weeks for some fruity summer goodness comin' out of this lil' ol' brewery!
Picture
Key Lime on the cusp of a boil!
* Mostly bustling, if we're being honest.
** We don't make a particularly large amount of beer per batch, so we gotta spread the love around as best we can.
*** And remember, kids: growlers have a limited shelf life, so the sooner you can drink them the better.

Get Yer Bone Up Next Weekend!

6/15/2016

Well hey there! It's been one heck of a week down here at Bone Up! As you may have already gathered from our excited ramblings on the various social medias, our launch party (hosted by the fantastic Maverick Marketplace Cafe) went so well that it greatly exceeded any expectation we could have had! We had a great crowd and great music and the beer flowed like wine - so much so that the kegs of Honey 'n' Hops sold out in less than two hours!* So again, to everybody who managed to make it out,** thank you so much for coming! We've put a ton of hard work and a lot of (usually figurative) blood, sweat, and tears*** into this weird little brewery of ours, and we're just excited beyond belief that we finally get to share the fruits of our labor with you!
Picture
That's our beer! We made that!

The Big Reveal... of a tap handle we've posted on Instagram 50 times
Picture
Picture
Our beer. On tap. For the first time ever. Words cannot describe.
Best dang pints we ever had.
Picture
In good company!
And if you didn't make it out to the launch party, never you fret! We're bustin' our humps gettin' this delicious beer on tap at some of the finer establishments around our fair city, so you can try some of this dang ol' beer we keep talking about! And we've been getting a pretty good response so far from bars we've talked to, with such encouraging comments as "you're from which brewery?" and "I've never heard of you before." But seriously though, we've got a lot in the works, but we've enacted a policy of not announcing draft lines until things are straight-up Official so's we don't get your hopes up prematurely.

And on that note, we're delivering some kegs of juicy, fruity Bone Smasher to our new friends at Woods Hill Table in Concord this weekend, so if you fancy a field trip on over to one of the finest dang farm to table restaurants in the greater Boston area, get your ass over there and ask for the mustache (or, barring that, you'd be advised to keep a half an eyeball on our Find Us page for Boston area bars)!
Picture
Get your paws on this beer starting next week!
And what's more, some of our neighbors decided to be downright neighborly and throw us a little shindig! The fine folks (and strong proponents of local beer) down at our neighborhood Kappy's are doin' up a thing and sellin' up some growlers of the beers we we got on hand! (specifically: Honey 'n' Hops, Bone Smasher, Black Witow, and - if it's humanly possible - Warehouse.) Details are loose for the time being, but we're penciled in for Saturday the 25th from 1:00 - 3:00. We'll (probably) be doing a casual tasting of the beers available, and we'll (definitely) have a whole buncha growlers ready for you so you can take some beer home to enjoy! Kappy's is right down the street from our brewery, and a hop skip and a jump from the Orange Line (Wellington), so for the time being, this is the closest you can get to drinking beer right at the source!
Picture
Click to join the Facebook event!
* I think the sun was still up when the last keg kicked.
** On short notice, to a somewhat out-of-the-way neighborhood, no less.
*** For legal reasons, we should probably inform you that there isn't actually blood, sweat, or tears in our beer.

What's the Time? It's About Damn Time!*

Brace yourselves, kids! We've actually got some news for once! Our first kegs are going on tap at Maverick Marketplace Cafe this Thursday (June 9)! And since this is a fairly momentous occasion, it's gonna be a bit of a Thing - the kegs are getting tapped at 7:30, and we'll be there to awkwardly hang out and/or talk about our beer! (You should be able to spot us pretty readily - we'll be the ones grinning ear to ear while simultaneously praying that nothing goes wrong. Or you can just look for the people decked out in the most possible Bone Up swag). What's more - there will be live music (which is actually a coincidence, but we can pretend it's all for us), freshly tapped cask ale (made by some non-Bone-Up brewery), and a bunch of other local beers on tap. You should come out, it'll be a fun time!
(And we do apologize for the short notice - we didn't want to make any announcements until this was a Sure Thing, and we ran into some problems with the laws of physics** when getting the beer ready.)
Picture
Jimbo got so excited designing the launch poster she fell off her chair.
And, for those of you who might be new around here and/or don't feel like looking through past blog posts to figure out what the hell beer we're gonna tap*** - it's Honey 'n' Hops Summer IPA! Rolling in at a respectable but drinkable 5.9% ABV and 52 IBU, Honey 'n' Hops Summer IPA is a light-bodied, delightfully uncomplicated ale. We add a whole bunch of honey in at the end of the boil, then dry hop the bejeezus out of it for a nice fresh pineapple aroma. It's perfect for kicking back a pint (or four) on a warm summer day!
Picture
Two tired brewers who have never deserved a beer more.
We'd also like to mention how friggin' stoked we are that our first location is a place that fits so well with what we're all about: Maverick Cafe is focused on fresh local beer and food, fun times, and cozy digs. They've been a delight to work with so far and we're looking forward to building a relationship where we can both support and benefit each other. (Sorry, it's been a heck of a week and we're just gettin' all kinds of sentimental about this wonderful, welcoming industry we're entering.)
In other news, we've been keepin' on keepin' on; brewin' and fermentin' and keggin' away! This past week we brewed Warehouse, our Farmhouse ale, and kegged up Bone Smasher Session IPA. This Friday, Black Witow is gettin' suited up in kegs as well. Yessiree, things are rollin' along like we're a Real Brewery!
Picture
And, if you didn't hear us shouting it from the social media rooftops, we had a great visit and subsequent writeup from our friends over at BostInno this past week! We let 'em snap a sneak preview at our mostly-complete taproom that's just itchin' to open up for you (we'll probably get all the fermentors out of it before then):
Picture

* It also may or may not be time to get ill.
** Or, more specifically, our lack of ability to bend said laws to our will.

*** And frankly, we wouldn't blame you for that last one. People seldom call this blog "concise."

"Hand Crafted is Just a Euphemism for Labor Intensive" and Boy is Our Beer Hand Crafted

Hello friends! The past week has been More Of The Same around these parts (and, man, we did not think we'd ever be so happy to be reporting that): our first beer - Honey 'n' Hops - is in kegs and just about ready to be unleashed upon the world!* We still ain't sayin' where it'll first be available, so if you're hankerin' for the first sip o' them suds you'd be advised to keep a half an eye on our various social medias.
Picture
Here we go!
Picture
The first of many delicious things we'll be bringin' your way.
And what's more, we brewed up the third of our inaugural one-off batches: Black Witow! For those "not in the know" or possibly "too lazy to click that link": Black Witow is a light-bodied easy-drinkin' black wheat ale brewed with our Proprietary Spice Blend.** We know that dark beers aren't exactly "all the rage" these days, but we happen to be particularly partial to 'em every now and again, and this one has a tendency to disappear from our glasses mighty quick whenever we have it around (besides, it's always nice to take a periodic break from hops on hops on hops). This guy is tangy, citrusy, and goes down ever so smoothly. And don't let the color fool you: Black Witow is a surprisingly fitting warm weather beer. In other words, we love the heck out of it and we're excited to share it with you!
Picture
A mash darker than the depths of space, threatening to consume you every time the paddle goes 'round.
Picture
Hoo boy did that bag of ingredients smell good!
Picture
Check out that sparge action!
(Going to file that one under "we're not sure if you care about this but we think it's hella cool.")
On a somewhat less positive note (and to answer the question we get asked most frequently), our taproom opening is still being held back as we wait on construction outside our building - railings need to get put on the loading dock, drains need to get put in the lot, and everything needs to get repaved. We've been told that it will take "about a month," but we're hearing that from somebody who tends to be... optimistic about completion times, so we'll see. But if we're lucky, we'll be swingin' our doors open in July so y'all can do some of that sweet, sweet summer drinkin' at our digs. Good times!
Picture
Soon!
* It's been difficult to suppress our instinct to just drink all of it; the sheer volume of beer we made is currently our saving grace.
** Coriander and orange peel. Also known as "the same spices used in every witbier" (hence the terrible pun in the name).
