* Much like last week, this blog was written ahead of time so we wouldn't be blogging from the beach (sorry kids! The "digital nomad" life is generally kind of bullshit!), which means that we might not "know" all the "current events." But also it turns out that if we plan ahead, we can... plan ahead? It probably shouldn't have taken us five years to learn that.
Hi kids! Are you ready for us to whip ourselves up into a frenzy about birthday-related goings-on? Well, you better be, because OUR BIRTHDAY PARTY IS THIS WEEKEND! Starting on Friday and lasting through Sunday! There's gonna be beer and music and snacks and beer and hot sauce and cool merch and beer and burgers and pizza and beer and ice cream and more music and beer and probably a cake and then after all that excitement we might have some beer. And speaking of beer, we've got more beer releases! Deux for yeux! First up is the second-to-last of our birthday beers and that's Part Deux! This happy-hoppy IPA was brewed to pair with the sounds of the Guilloteenagers and it's a damn good pairing for rockin' out and/or shenanigans which is a good thing because "rockin' out and/or shenanigans" might as well be the tagline for them ol' Guilloteenagers! Anyway it's available in cans right now and on draft soon* so you should come drink some! The beer was heisted from the barrels and then heisted into bottles and soon it will be heisted into your belly and we are just really into "heisting" as a verb rn can you tell And lastly (at least on the new beer front) we've got the last of our birthday releases and that's The Heist! This here's a bit of a hard-to-describe beer - in that it's a blended wild ale that leans more towards "light and tart" than it does towards "funk bomb" - and we thought that would be a right dandy pairing for the hard-to-pin-down sounds of DnA's Evolution! These fine folks have been playing at our party for years (four, to be precise) and they've run sound for the show at least once and also their music is very good which I probably should have said first because that's really the important part but anyway the beer to drink while you're listening to them is on tap and in bottles right now and we're workin' with a limited quantity so you may wanna get while there's gettin' to be got because it's damn good! Gang's all here! See you this weekend :D :D :D Oh! And did we mention that during our birthday party, all of the band beers will be on draft? Because they will! Even the ones that are "can only" will be makin' a quick debut on draft as their respective bands serenade you from our stage!
Howdy-do friends and, uh, friends! We're inchin' ever-closer to our birthday party (which we'll be hosting from August 27th through August 29th), so barring any big weird news* we'll just get to shoutin' about the festivities and all the cool beers we brewed for you to drink at said festivities! Just a high quality summer sunset. Nothing more. Nothing less. Oh, but speaking of "news," we got approved to keep our beer garden open! We actually didn't talk about this all that much before because of reasons, but our beer garden was technically "temporary" and was originally only allowed to exist because of the State of Emergency, which ended June 15th (which means we would have had to shut down most of our seating starting on August 15th). But! We got approval last week, so that's one less thing for us to panic about! Woo! We love stouts, stouty stout stouts Anyway. Moving on to beer. And to kick things off, we'd like to somewhat sheepishly say that we kinda sorta announced one of the wrong beers last week because SOMEbody (Jared) couldn't be bothered to double check which beers had/hadn't been announced and/or read previous blog posts. Anyway, that means that Blood Built got extra attention (which it should because it's delicious) and also that means that we've got THREE beers to talk about this week! ::: bracing ourselves for everyone who's going to order the "Blue Maniac" ::: First in that lineup is a beer brewed for some newcomers to our stage: Blue Manic! And using our legendary Bone Up Beer Naming Creativity, we named the beer Blue Manic!** Anyway it's a pale ale with a bit of honey and a handful of spruce tips and it's mighty tasty and it's available in cans, like, a week ago and you should drink some! The goat knows what's good for you, and it's smoked beer Next on up is a recurring beer for a band who has been a part of our festivities for a little while now, and that band/beer is Organ Meats! Organ Meats (the beer) is a nice 'n light 'n easy-drinkin' smoked beer that (as we've learned from experience) is sure to befuddle and/or delight you! And if you want a bit of an "insider tip" about this beer, we actually change up the smoked malt that we use every year and this year we went with a somewhat milder-tasting smoke source (beechwood, as opposed to last year's cherrywood) so it's a smidge more subtle (inasmuch as something like this can be subtle) and anyway it's in cans right now and it is indeed quite tasty! The new and improved raspberry lime rickey And! Lastly but far from leastly in our lineup of birthday beer releases for this week is Electric Juicer! This beer was brewed to pair with the tunes of another set of newcomers to our stage: The Electric Heaters! They'll be bringin' the surf rock, so we figured we'd go with something light and fruity and so we dumped a buncha raspberry and lime into a grisette and now we've got this beer available in cans right now and on draft at some point and it's hella good and you should drink it! :) :) :) And moving away from the beers brewed for bands, it behooves us to let y'all know who's playin' when, so here goes! On Friday, August 27th our metal (or possibly post metal? I'll admit that I don't know what "post" means when applied to music styles) friends from Lesser Glow are kickin' things off with a bang (probably starting around 6:30, which isn't exactly a really metal time of day), to be followed by some intense (post) punk provided by Blood Built Empire and then that's about it because we're not supposed to have music past like 9:30 or so. Then on Saturday, August 28th we're startin' off (circa 1 PM) with some stoner metal from Blue Manic and then headin' straight into a buncha surf rock courtesy of The Wiesstronauts and then The Electric Heaters! Then we're back to stoner metal with Organ Meats and we're cappin' it off with some punk from the Guilloteenagers! And to finish off the weekend, on Sunday, August 29th we're startin' the day off right (also circa 1 PM) with some prog rock from our pals in DnA's Evolution, followed by MORE Weisstronauts (we think surf rock is pretty much ideal day-drinking music, can you tell?) and then we're bringin' the swing with Sunken City! And then just in case you haven't listened to enough surf rock over the course of the weekend, we've got another set from The Electric Heaters to finish off the weekend! Anyway, we've said this a jillion times before but we are pretty much continually amazed that all these awesome bands want to come out to our birthday party and play music on what is essentially a converted loading dock and it just gives us the straight-up Warm Fuzzies to think about how cool it is that we get to do stuff like this. We'll try not to get all teary-eyed about friendship or whatever until this is all said and done, but the point is that this is gonna be hella fun and we're excited as all get-out that we get to share it with you!
* We actually wrote this blog ahead of time, which is pretty uncharacteristic for us - usually it's frantically typed out at the literal last minute because SOMEbody has poor time management skills. Anyway, we (the authors of this here blog) have a Personal Obligation to go to the beach for a week so we're kinda just assuming that there won't be any new news for a couple weeks. Seems like a safe bet, right? ** Naming beers is harder than you think, okay? Hello friends! We're just over TWO WEEKS from our dang favorite time of year and that of course is our birthday party (which we've been shouting about for a month or so at this point, but we will still remind you that it's Friday August 27th through Sunday August 29th) and it's gonna be heaps of fun and you should absolutely come join us and raise a glass to five friggin' years of Taproom Times down here at ol' Bone Up and in the meantime there are few things we want to do more than stick our fingers in our ears and completely ignore the fact that things Out In The World are looking increasingly grim these days, only that's not really our style around here. SO. We'll talk about the Real Serious Adult Stuff and then we'll get back to prancing around and giggling and gushing about our birthday party. Everythingisfineeverythingisfineeverythingisfineeverythingisfine So. Unless you've been living under a particularly accommodating rock these past few weeks/months (which honestly sounds like a good idea from a health/safety standpoint), there's been some less-than-stellar (read: horrifying, or at least horrifying-adjacent) news about this whole pandemic situation. Anyway we're not here to rehash a bunch of stuff you've already heard (unless you're under the aforementioned rock, in which case you should probably just skip this paragraph and/or stay under that rock for a while) because the current Issue Of The Day is "vaccine passports" and to be honest we've got a lot of complicated feelings about those, but the tl;dr is that we're not requiring them yet, with a big emphasis on the word "yet." Among other things, we're expecting that at some point - probably sooner rather than later - we'll be getting new rules from The Gubbermint about this, and we'd rather not invent our own system only to have to redo it from scratch two weeks later when the state issues its own well-intentioned-but-frankly-perplexing* set of guidelines. And (assuming that does happen) even if the state's rules are weird and annoying, at least they'll (hopefully) be uniform - that seems better than having a bunch of brewers/bar owners/restaurateurs making their own judgment calls on matters of public health and then implementing a million different janky fixes to a problem they don't fully understand.** So there you have it. We're not really sticking our heads in the sand, but we're not exactly springing into action, either. At least not yet. Also, get yourself vaccinated if you aren't already. For fuck's sake. Please. Alright! After all that cheerfulness, I could really use a beer. Or several. And as luck would have it, we just released a new beer! Or several! "Weisstro-Special Bitter" And first on that ol' docket is Seven X's! This here is the fifth dang beer we've brewed to pair with the music of The Weisstronauts and this time around they hinted that their music might go quite nicely with something in the ESB neighborhood so we whipped up a lightly-malty lil' treat (full of local hops and local grains, as is our style these days) and dang but if it ain't tasty! It's surefire smooth and all-around pleasant and we sure do expect that we'd have a fine time gettin' to know it over the course of an entire day (not unlike the music it was meant to pair with) and it's out in cans right now and you should try some! Hello old friend And! We just so happen to have another birthday beer available in cans right now and that's Blood Built! This is the fourth year in a row that we've made this lil' dry stout to pair with the music of Blood Built Empire and there's a reason we keep coming back*** to it year after year, and that reason is that it's delicious! But you ain't gotta take our word for it - come getcha some! Dog! Pool! Party! Also! If you're lookin' for something to do while you're drinkin' all these new beers (and/or revisiting old favorites), our dog pool party - co-hosted by Harvey's Hope - is this Sunday 12-4! We'll be blockin' off part of the beer garden and settin' up some pools for pooches to get their splash on! It'll be a ton of fun, or at least some very cute dog-watching (possibly from outside the "splash 'n shake zone"), so come on by and join us! Tired about hearing 'bout our birthday bash yet? No? Great! Oh! And! To get back talkin' about our ol' birthday party for just a wee bit, we've got a couple more friends joining us that we haven't yet gotten a chance to shout about, so here goes! :::: drooling on keyboard ::::: On Friday (August 27th), in addition to the brewers' barbecue, we'll be hosting TC Scoops and their ice cream bus! They happen to specialize in ice cream flights that not-so-coincidentally pair very well with some of our beer flights and honestly we've been dreaming about this ice cream since the last time we had it, so we predict you gon' enjoy! ::::: tearing through dresser to find any items that aren't already covered in our brewery's logo ::::: Then on Saturday (August 28th) we've got our friend(s) from Heads Up Screenprinting comin' by to do some live screenprinting! They'll have a handful of designs to choose from (some of them exclusive to this particular event) and they'll print on damn near anything you ask 'em to! More to the point, that means that if you wanna get our designs printed on some clothing/tote bags/bedsheets that you already own (rather than buying all new stuff, which is also an option. Except for maybe the bedsheets), you totally can! So bring some stuff on by and get it all printed up! ::::: dramatically making room in the fridge door for New Hot Sauce :::::: And lastly, no birthday party would be complete without a visit from Alex (of Alex's Ugly Sauce), so we're bringin' him in on Sunday (August 29th)! We figure hot sauce is the perfect accompaniment for shoveling fried chicken into your face as you bemoan the choices you made the previous night, which means you'll get to step right on up to that ol' sauce saloon and burn off that hangover come Sunday morning!
* Why yes, I AM still annoyed that we had to pretend to be a restaurant for ten months. ** We very much include ourselves in the "they" who don't fully understand the problem. We're hardly epidemiologists, which is why we just try to follow the rules we're given. *** If you want to get all technical about it, it's kinda-sorta a different recipe every year, except for all the ways that it isn't. In short, we use the same grains every time, but we use different brands of the same stuff (most notably roasted barley), and that actually makes a pretty big difference it turns out. Howdy friends! We're right ready to hit the ground running this week on account of we've got a whole lotta rambling about beer that we gotta do, so let's get to it! Bingo-bango, here's some mango First on up we got a new beer that's comin' out on tap (right now) and in cans (this Friday) and that's Two to Mango! This here's another beer we brewed for our upcoming birthday party (spoiler alert: every beer release this month is gonna be a birthday beer. Also the party's August 27th - 29th and you should come!), more specifically we brewed it to pair with the music of Sunken City! These fine folks have been a part of our festivities for four friggin' years at this point so we figured we'd "mix it up" a lil' bit and dump a crapton of mango puree into a big, fruity IPA and now you can have some! SUSTENANCE And speaking of releasing beers to pair with bands that have been playing at our birthday party for years and years, this year's rendition of Blood Built - a dry stout made to pair with the sounds of Blood Built Empire - is out in cans! Right now! Come drink some! A zippy, fruity lil' thing to sip on as you contemplate the notion of humanity as a parasite or whatever Oh! And while we're on about beers that are available in cans right now, we now have Vacant Throne (which was released on draft last week) available in cans! Right now! A rare "kick the keg" special! And since we're releasin' all these ol' birthday beers this month (three down, six to go!), we're doin' what we can to try and free up some draft lines and in practical terms that means that - until we get through the last little drips and drabs - Wellington is priced to move! So if you wanna say goodbye to ol' Wellington, or if you just wanna get some budget-friendly pints, come on by and get while there's gettin' to be got! He popped the floatie, like, right after this picture was taken And moving away from yammering about the birthday for a bit, it behooves us to mention an event that we've got coming up in the (slightly) nearer future and that's the dog pool party! We were supposed to host this earlier in the summer, but the rescue we were working with had to reschedule (which was honestly for the best because it ended up being crappy weather that day anyway) and it's coming up soon! More to the point, it's gonna be on Sunday, August 15th and you should come out and bring your pups! We cannot wait to cram so many Matilda pastelitos into our mouths :D :D :D And while we're on the subject of taproom events, we should probably mention that once September hits we'll be bringin' back taproom events in full force! We've been spending the past few weeks and/or months getting in touch with people that we had worked with in the Before Times and we've got a whole slate of tasty food and fun events and all kindsa fun crap lined up for y'all, so keep them eyes peeled as the temperature starts to drop! Adequate work, Lia! And! Lastly! It's been over a year since we've been able to say this, and it feels damn good to be bringin' this back: we've got coloring contest winners! There was some extremely adequate coloring this month, which made it a much tougher decision than usual, but we made our call and named our winner(s)! Congration! The runners up!
