And first on that ol' list o' happenin's is Jeff! Jeff is almost here! Jeff.
Well hi there! It's that dang ol' time again - time to ramble on and on about all the cool things what we got doin' aroun' these here parts!
And first on that ol' list o' happenin's is Jeff! Jeff is almost here! Jeff.
Then on Thursday we're trussin' up our trusty cask and this week it's Out of Bounds! That sucker's been flyin' off the draft lines since we tapped it, so we're right stoked to try it with a lil' added dab of peachy ol' Idaho 7! Come drink some with us!
Also on Thursday we're doin' up more Simpsons Trivia! And as an added "bonus," we just got in a new order of weird trivia prizes and whoa nelly are there some interesting choices this time around. Come win some and find out for yourself!
Then on Friday we're still keepin' that hand-pie-Friday train rollin' (sort of) with the (sort of) triumphant return of Jaju Pierogi! Their food is good and you will eat it.
Also on Friday, though a bit further afield, we'll be reppin' strong at the Original Gravity concert! This time around they're puttin' on an opera that we're told is Kind of a Big Deal* so we figured we'd roll with it and get Fancy with the beer we're bringin' so we're schleppin' a beer engine on over there to pour a cask of Oink that's been primed with pineapple juice and sweetened with lactose. Will it be any good? Who knows! We don't
* Truth be told, the only opera we actually know of is La Boheme, and that's only because it was mentioned in Trading Places.
Hello friends! It's finally that wonderful time of year again: Fake Spring! It's time to throw on some inadvisably-breezy clothing and pretend like you're not constantly shivering while you sit in the gray mist on the patio, and we've got just the beers to go along with it!
More to the point, we had an under-the-radar new release this weekend (which means it's on tap right now) that'll almost let you convince yourself it's spring as long as you don't look or go outside: On-On! Brewed as a celebration of running or fitness or something, this light 'n' easy smooth sipper goes down just as easy after a long run as it does after a well-earned mountain of nachos.
A fine accompaniment to all types of outdoor mischief.
And this week's trusty cask (on tap Thursday) is one for those of you who ain't fooled by this Decoy Spring: Pat Signal! We're once again trottin' out this beer that was straight-up made to be served on cask and this time around we're doin' it up old-school: no frills, no nonsense, just regular ol' Cask Goodness!
And speaking of cask goodness, it's finally NERAX time! For those of you who ain't "in the know" on this particular fun time, NERAX is an annual, almost-week-long celebration of all things cask. It's a ton of fun and we're always stoked to be a part of it, and this year we're reppin' strong with - you guessed it - a firkin o' Pat Signal! So if you're in the Southie area this week/weekend, we do suggest you stop on by.
The Bone Up crew will be making right proper fools of themselves during the Friday evening session.
And for fun times a little closer to home, this Thursday is the March installment of Audio Triviality! We're told that the theme this month is "movies," though we're not completely sure what direction he's gonna take with that (songs from soundtracks? Songs about movies, i.e. the entire Misfits catalog? Forcing us to watch him reënact scenes from his favorite movies? Who knows!), so come on out and test your extremely-specific knowledge against a buncha other nerds!
As our host Matt would say: "Holla!"
Then on Saturday we've got our cake friends from Sweetteeth Bakery comin' by with some sweet treats for you to eat! They make very good cakes, so you should probably eat some.
Keeping with our policy of always having cake around, we've got cake around!
Oh! And we gotta announce the coloring contest winners from March! Adequate work, everybody!
Our winner, Maggie! Great jorb!
Our runners up!
Hello friends! Here's all the new beers and fun stuff and tasty treats we got goin' on this week!
First up, on tap right now is Out of Bounds IPA! We collabbed up with Thomson Country Club to make a beer extra special just for their clubhouse, and we're givin' y'all a sneak preview in our dang ol' taproom! Designed with outdoorsy springtime fun in mind, sweet ‘n nutty malts balance out a hop profile featuring fruity Idaho 7 and citrusy Centennial. It gon' be good.
Then on Thursday we're tappin' up a cask of a new favorite around these parts: Snail the Pale! And while we think this lil' ol' beer is just dandy without anything added to it, we went on ahead and jammed a buncha CrysCade hops (from our friends at Four Star Farms, of course) in there anyway! So come on out and get while the gettin's good - this cask (along with its draft counterpart) is soon to be a fond memory around these here parts.
And since we thought you deserved a lil' somethin' extra on Thursday, we're doin' another trivia night and this time around we're bringin' in a friend of the brewery to grill y'all on the ins and outs of Futurama! And in case you need snacks while you're gettin' trivial (and who doesn't need snacks?), we've also got Brato up in the house servin' up futuristic grilled cheeses or something!
Then on Friday we're bringin' in new-to-us JA Patties for - you guessed it - Jamaican hand patties! And since we don't know them all too well yet, we fully intend to give them a true Bone Up Welcome by shoveling all of their food into our mouths at the first chance we get, and we highly recommend you do the same!
Then on Saturday we got some double popup action for all y'all! What's more, they're both tried-and-true favorites that need no further introduction: first up - startin' at 3 PM - is Speakeasy Donuts! Then hot on their heels starting at 6 PM ish is Matilda's! I daresay there will be lots of good tastes.
And finally, on Sunday, we're once again bustin' out the big guns: Girl Scout Cookie Flights! Startin' at noon and lasting through most of the day (or until y'all eat all our damn cookies), we'll be dishin' up beer flights paired with cookie flights (with cookie proceeds going to a local Girl Scout troop, of course), so if you got yourself a sweet tooth (or if you missed it last time around), come on by and get snackin'!
Howdy do, cats and kittens! We're right-on rockin' and rollin' with the fun times and tasty things and that's been a dang ol' party so let's do some more of that!
First up - in case you missed it - we bid a final farewell to our beloved Estate this past weekend. But never you fret! We got more hoppy goodness comin' atcha in the form of the Royal Sampler! You regular readers out there* are almost certainly familiar with our misfit/"smoothie" IPAs, and this one follows a pretty similar format: we gathered up a whole mess o' different hops and maybe a lil' extra somethin' and jammed this big ol' beer fulla that hoppy goodness until it was burstin' at the dang seams and now we've got a beer that's got all kinds** of fruitiness all up ins! Anyway it's on tap right now and you should drink it!
Also on tap right this very minute is this year's iteration of Big Boots! Even though we have women involved in every part of Bone Up on a daily basis, once a year we wrangle a group o' ladies together to brew a batch of beer celebrating their role in our little corner of the industry, and every year it's been a bigger group! The 2019 batch of Boots is a dry hopped farmhouse ale featuring all of our favorite things: oats for a smooth body, tangy wheat, and a new-to-us hop variety: peachy 'n fruity Idaho Gem. Go on, try it!
Anyway, looking into the all-too-distant future that is Thursday, we're tappin' up a cask of a beer that was friggin' made to be run through the ol' beer engine: Pat Signal! And to celebrate its first appearance on cask (out of three, if you count NERAX, which we do), we're puttin' on the cask that's been fortified with Amandine-soaked oak chips! We fully expect that Pat himself will be able to sense this cask being tapped, and will materialize at the bar the moment it's ready.
Also on Thursday, we're continuin' our Month O' Trivia with more trivia! This time around, it's all centered around old-school cartoons, so if you cut your chops on them Looney Tunes and/or Merrie Melodies, come on out and show off your smarts!
Then on Friday we got us another hand pie day with more pastelitos from Matilda's!
And if you're lookin' for some meat in your mouth on Saturday, we've got the Bacon Truck back up in for all your cured meat needs!
And then. Lastly but far from leastly. This Sunday is the return of Chicken 'n' Waffles! If you wanna get your sweet 'n savory fix for brunch times, search no further (but I'd recommend getting here early, they sold out right quick last time)!
Oh, and we saved the best news for last! We! Are! Hiring! If you'd like to join our wonderful bartending/event team on a part time basis, send your resume and cover letter over to us (Liz and Jared) at firstname.lastname@example.org!
* Both of you.
** OK fine, maybe not all kinds, but at least several kinds. Maybe as many as 20 kinds.
Howdy and hello! We've got a weekend that's jam-packed* fulla fun and/or tasty times and a draft list that's jam-packed fulla new beers, so here we go!
The first new addition to our draft list is the Pat Signal! We're full-on preppin' for a lil' ol' festival that's comin' up in a few weeks (namely NERAX, which just so happens to be our favorite fest 'round these parts) so we did up a beer that's gonna be a surefire solid sip o' suds on cask and we named it in honor of the biggest cask fan ever to grace one of our barstools (hi Patrick!)! Anyway, Pat Signal's a lightly roasty, hella bready lil' brown ale that's just gonna tear up that beer engine, I tell ya what, but you ain't gotta wait around for the cask because it's on draft and I'll be durned to heck if that ain't a tasty tipple too!
Dananananananana dananananananana patmaaaaan, patmaaan...
And if you're more a fan of the heavy hitters and/or beers that are moderately ridiculous, we also tapped Fancy Pants! We said goodbye to our beloved Lazy Pants and got all kindsa fancy with a wild ride through Flavor Towne** that's just downright tasty!
Speaking of tasty, this Thursday we've got the return of Haley on cask! This time around it's no muss, no fuss - just Straight Up Haley Goodness and we gon' drink it.
And if you're lookin' for something to do with your hands/brain while you gulp down a bunch of Haley, you should come on out to Simpsons Trivia starting at eight!
Then on Friday we're keepin' the hand-pie-Friday train rollin' with the return of our pierogi friends from Spoko!
Then on Saturday we've got a whole host o' treats for y'all, including another dang new beer! That's right - this Saturday is the Official Launch Day for the beer that some of y'all got to see in Sneak Preview Mode last week: Oink! Brewed with bacon in mind, Oink! is a wheat beer made with malts that were smoked over bourbon barrel staves and oh man is it so smoky and delicious.
I bet it would go pretty well with bacon...
Also on Saturday, we've got the Bacon Truck comin' by all afternoon with meat treats! I bet those meat treats would go pretty dang well with Oink!
And if you're not the meat type but you still wanna get your grub on, we've got Farmhouse Burger Co. slingin' veggie burgers startin' at six!
AND. Lastly. If you wanna escape the green-beer amateur-hour crowd on Sunday, we're bringin' in new-to-us Jim's Kabob with falafel and hummus and other Mediterranean treats!
You know. Traditional Irish fare.
* Or should I say HAM packed! (... i'll see myself out)
** Is that phrase copyright Guy Fieri? Wouldn't surprise me if it was.
Well hello again, one and all! How are you? We're great, thanks for asking! We had a dandy ol' time on Kafka Day and we sure hope you did too! We appreciate you braving the "storm of the century" (which ended up being some flurries and little else) to come drink fancy beer with us, so we hope you enjoyed it!
We love you guys.
And speaking of fancy beer, this weekend we said a (temporary) goodbye to a few old friends - FAO and Joybringer, to be precise - and while we're sad to see them go, we're stoked as all get out to tap some new (and/or new-ish) stuff!
First on that there list - on tap right now - we're keepin' Melvin the Mammoth on tap for a spell! Melvin's a barleywine that was a doozy to make, but that violent fermentation gave us a delicious, malty reward. We've only tapped this caramelly ol' boozebag in fits and spurts in the past, and we figured that now's a great time to let it stretch its legs a bit and make some new friends!
Look at that color.
Also on tap right now is Snail the Pale! We sure do love us some pale ales, so we made one and it's hella tasty! Come drink some with us!
Pictured: your RDA of deliciousness.
And speaking of new beers, we've got a couple rad things up our figurative sleeves for the coming weeks and months. We're preppin' up to bid a bittersweet farewell to a few things in the near future (notably Stone Valley and Lazy Pants and - slightly less soon - Joyrider), but we're all kinds of prepared up in here! Lazy Pants will be succeeded by its, um, fancier cousin: Fancy Pants! And our beloved Stone Valley will be replaced by a brown ale whose details are still very hush-hush, so that's all we gon' say for now. And! Next week we're gonna have The Bacon Truck up in here slingin' cured meats, so we brewed up a smoked wheat beer (named Oink!, naturally) to go with it!
ANYway, getting back closer to now, let's talk casks! Since y'all out there in Cask Land are so good to us, we're givin' you a sneak preview and tappin' up the cask o' Oink! on Thursday! We have it on good authority that this beer's gonna be tasty as heck, but you ain't gotta take our word for it 'cuz you can try it your dang self!
Oink oink oink!
Speaking of Thursday, we're nigh-on approaching this month's installment of Audio Triviality! The theme this month is "beer," though I can't imagine where he would have gotten the idea to use such an outlandish topic.
But speaking of trivia, March is (apparently) The Month of Trivia! We've got trivial goings-on every damn Thursday this month (and, on further reflection, most of them are about cartoons in some way or another), so come on out and flex them (useless) knowledge muscles all dang month!
We like cartoons, 'k?
Movin' right on into the weekend, on Friday we got our friends from Matilda's dishin' up the fried treats! You should come eat some treats, you've earned it.
And while we're on about fried treats, on Saturday we've got Three Kitchens Catering in with more wing flights! Get it? Wings? Flight? Anyway these chickens probably won't be flying anywhere because we're going to eat all of them.
Anydangways, since we're just startin' to get all that lousy Smarch weather all up ins, that means that we've got coloring contest winners to announce! And it was a tough one this month because we had some Extremely Adequate entries, but we did our best and here's what we picked!
First place to... "Steph's Roommate!" Great jorb!
Our runners up!
Dang on a thang, friends, it's really real! We finally did all the buildout and cut through all the red tape and redid half of the buildout because the people in charge changed their minds about what is/isn't required and painted everything and spiffed things up and now our definitely-not-a-hellish-nightmare expansion is complete! We done it! We've got more space and more seats and we've now got the ability to do a bunch of weird one-off events that we couldn't do previously (because they'd overrun our tiny taproom and not everybody is down with that) and we're just ever so stoked!
Can I have beer now?
Yes. Yes you can.
And we got some party plans for y'all on this fine festive weekend, but also some of those are things that we were gonna do anyway because we only had, like, six days to plan all this stuff so we're just slappin' the word "party" on some the normal fun times we bring you (but don't you worry, there's also Bigger Better Fun Times too). Anyway, the point is that Thursday is Lego Night! Remember* how fun it was to play with Legos? Well it's still fun as heck so we got us a whole crapton of them there buildy blocks and we're gonna share! That's pretty much the deal for now, but we've got some Big Ideas all up in our brains that we'll be trottin' out later on if this is a hit (for instance, Jared keeps talking about "Lego Olympics" and then refusing to elaborate), so come on out and build some stuff!
It gon' be fun
And what to drink while you build tiny worlds and then probably spill beer all over them? Probably the cask of Haley that we're tappin'! What's Haley? Only the newest addition to our Puppers Past series, and this time it's a sweet stout that's been rested on some oak spirals that fill it fulla dry-yet-chocolatey goodness! And this particular cask happens to be spiked with even more oak in the form of Irish-whiskey-soaked oak chips! Party on!
This beer may look imposing, but really it's just a hug in a glass.
Anyway, back to all that giddy dancing around because of our expansion: in true Bone Up Style, we're takin' this occasion as an excuse to celebrate, so celebrate we shall! We went diggin' around through the ol' Barrel Hold for some special beers to tap and we grabbed some Quadless Leg Monster (the last ever keg!) and some barrel-aged El Pulpo and some Melvin and then we figured we should probably make y'all a new special blend since you've been so dang patient and/or supportive during our never-ending expansion so now we've got a whole bunch of Fancy Pants! It's a big ol' barrel aged farmhouse ale with a buncha raspberries and hibiscus and all kinds of deliciousness. And you get to drink some!
17oz mugs of this? What could possibly go wrong?
Back to the task at hand, in honor of the fun times we had with our local government over the past weeks and months, we're callin' this celebration Kafka** Day! And since it's Kafka Day, it's really gonna be two days! That means that startin' on Friday and continuing on to Saturday at closing time, we're gonna be slingin' special beers and gettin' merry and you should join us!
This is our last ever keg of Quadless. Damn. Goodbyes are sad, but the fact that it's even pouring means we got a real reason to celebrate. Come out and salute the new space!
And since no party is complete without snacks, we've got snacks! On Friday we've got the folks from Boston Jerky slingin' dried meats, then on Saturday we have new-to-us Teri-yummy and Sweetteeth Baking (because you gotta have cake)! Then on Sunday as a "cool down" after all the cake, we've got Bird's Nest in here doin' what they do best, and what they do best is fried manicotti!
Presented to you: a miscellaneous assortment of good times!
* If you're anything like us, you're remembering back to, like, last week.
** From Merriam-Webster: Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was a Czech-born German-language writer whose surreal fiction vividly expressed the anxiety, alienation, and powerlessness of the individual in the 20th century. Kafka's work is characterized by nightmarish settings in which characters are crushed by nonsensical, blind authority. Thus, the word Kafkaesque is often applied to bizarre and impersonal administrative situations where the individual feels powerless to understand or control what is happening. (For example, a brewery expansion)
Well hello there! I hope you're all rested up from your long weekend full of beer and snacks, but in case you need a regular-sized weekend full of beer and snacks, we went and got one ready for you!
And for our first "order of business," for those of you who didn't "get the memo," we've got Estate on tap! Estate, if you ain't "in the know," is a delightful-ass Super IPA made with a whole mess of ingredients (specifically wheat and hops) grown by our friends at Four Star Farms! Party times! Friendship times! Friendship party!
Anyway, movin' on and movin' forward, we're downright chuffed to let you know that this week's cask is a new favorite around here: Bone Machine! It's a right tasty beverage in its own right, but we figured we'd give it a little extra somethin' in the form of some Masscade! It's gettin' tapped on Thursday, so come get while there's gettin' to be got!
Mmm... cask machine...
And speaking of Thursday, this Thursday is also (apparently) gonna be a big day in the form of Harry Potter Trivia! And to "sweeten the deal," we're bringin' in our friends from Deep Cuts Deli to sling some sammiches and other treats! And while we're at it, it might behoove us to issue a word to the wise: there have been some rumblings that this might be a popular event, so we do suggest getting here early if you're hellbent on participating (and doubly so if you prefer to be seated whilst doing so).
Anyway, gettin' on to the rest of the dang ol' week(end), this Friday we're welcomin' in new-to-us Hooked Fish Shop to come on by and deliver us some delicacies from the briny deep!
Then on Saturday we've got a different set of sandwich friends comin' by and they're packin' pastrami! Last time we had Beantown Pastrami in here they just started adding pastrami to other foods all willy-nilly like some kind of chaotic force of Delicious and we're just straight-up stoked to have them back!
And did we mention that as of this morning, we've now got room for 98? More details next week...
Hi kids! We're back in action once again with tasty beers and tasty snacks and good times and friendship and a "holiday" that definitely isn't total bullshit and special hours for an actual holiday and just all kindsa good stuff, so buckle on up!
First up, on tap right now is our collaboration beer with our friends at Small Change: Bone Machine! It's a straight-up no-fuss farmhouse brewed with a heap o' local ingredients and a bigger heap of friendship - bright 'n smooth with lovely notes of candied lemon, light spice, and a dry finish! You will enjoy it.
Coming soon: a picture of all of us enjoying it together. We just couldn't wait!
Next up, on tap soon, but definitely by Sunday is Lazy Pants! If you've ever wondered (possibly out loud, possibly to nobody in particular) why chocolate beers can't be light-colored, then you're in luck! And if you were hoping we'd take that idea and then add a whole crapton of raspberry to it, you're even more in luck! Now the only unanswered question is "how much of this can I drink in one sitting before the people I'm with get kind of grossed out?" and let's just say that we believe in you.
Lazy Pants has already inspired clever beertail names such as Kelly's Pants, Extra Pants, Wasted Pants, Doom Pants, Best Pants, Joy Pants... the list goes on. Ask for one at the bar and say your prayers!
And while we're talkin' about drinking lots in one sitting, we gots to give you the lowdown on this week's cask, on tap Thursday! Kelly is once again gracing us with her presence, and this time she's fortified by Rock 'n' Rye soaked oak chips!
Definitely not the same picture we used last week
Also on Thursday is a very romantical edition of Simpsons Trivia, paired up with heapin' helpin' of tamales! Trivia starts at 8, but you'd best get here before then because last month there was a medium seat crisis. Plus, tamales!
P.S. As our Valentine to you, we may just tap Lazy Pants a couple days early. Maybe.
Then on Friday we're celebrating everybody's favorite February holiday: National Hippo Day!* And in honor of this holiday that we definitely didn't just learn about a couple days ago, we've got Matilda's back in the house!
Then on Saturday to satisfy your sweet tooth after all those hippo-related festivities we're bringin' in Top Shelf Cookies to sling their delectable treats all afternoon!
Movin' on to Sunday, we've got a whole dang host of good stuff lined up for you! That's the Official Launch Day for Lazy Pants (which you may remember from several paragraphs ago) and we're doin' a chicken 'n' waffles brunch with our friends from Brato, and we're gonna have some Girl Scouts in here to satisfy all your cookie needs! If there's such thing as too many good times, we may be headed in that direction.
And. And! Since there's a real-ass holiday this weekend (not to discount the ones based on hippos and/or cardboard cutouts of hearts) we are open on Monday the 18th from 12-6 for President's Day, so come on out and while away your Monday off, you earned it!
Well, you *probably* earned it.
* If you don't know why this particular pachyderm is pertinent, perhaps you ought ask at the bar - you're in for either a treat or a frustrating evening, depending on your tastes.
Howdy howdy once again, one and all! It's a big ol' week packed fulla fun and nonsense and fun nonsense, so we gon' cut the chitter chatter and get on with it!
First and/or foremost, we've been plowin' through the blink-and-you'll-miss-'em Horatio Day beers and we've settled on something that's got a bit more volume to back itself up: Joyrider! That sucker's on tap right now and it's gonna be around for longer than, say, barrel-aged El Pulpo which was here for roughly the duration of a firm handshake and a curt goodbye (but we do still have it in bottles!), so come on out and get joyful!
But speaking of beers that aren't long for this world, it behooves us to let you know that we're down to the last bits of El Pulpo (the regular kind) and Doomrider, so if you're partial to these particular tipples we might suggest you get while there's gettin' to be got!
And just in case you *do* miss 'em on draft, a) please stop crying, and 2) just come buy the bottles. We've still got a couple cases of each! (Well, the El Pulpo bottles are all the barrel aged version. Oh NOO.)
"But wait," you say, "if there are beers about to kick, does that mean you've got new beer(s) on the horizon?" And the answer to that is, of course, a resounding Yes! We! Do! There's some pretty rad stuff comin' up, including our collaboration brew with Small Change (and also an estate-grown Super IPA for when we polish off the rest of that Cryptic Nonsense) and probably a couple other things too, so keep them eyes peeled!
Beer fueled by friendship and good vibes!
Anyway, if you've been around us for any dang ol' amount of time you'll hear us sayin' that the world needs more Kelly on cask, so we've got Kelly! On cask! Starting Thursday!
Speaking of Thursday, this Thursday is February's installment of Audio Triviality! And to "sweeten the deal" we're also gonna have Mr. Tamole slingin' tamales all evening! So if you're lookin' for good beer and good times and good grub and good tunes and probably some bad puns, come on by!
The theme is "Animals." To find out what that has to do with anything, you'll just have to come on by!
Then on Friday we're gettin' the meat train rollin' with Beantown Pastrami! And from the menu items we've seen, they've gotten pretty creative* with their sliced meats, so it's bound to be tasty times!
Come hungry - pastrami sammies, hot dogs, and chili dosed with extra meats are up on the menu!
Then on Saturday our friends from T'ahpas 529 are comin' by to dish out some delicious dishes because Saturdays are made for snacking! Check out this menu!
Delicious snacking: imminent
And if you happen to be a bit further south on Saturday - say, somewhere on or near the Cape - we'll be reppin' strong at the Dark of Winter Black Ale Fest at Cape Cod Brewing! And as you might have guessed, this fest is being thrown in collaboration with the Black Ale Project, which not only means lots of great dark beer (which, if you ask us, don't get enough love), it also means supporting a good cause! Sounds pretty rad to us, which is why we'll be there and why you should be too!
Tickets here: Dark of Winter Fest
* Assuming your definition of "creative" includes "adding pastrami to other, non-pastrami foods" and honestly if that's not the case then maybe you should seriously reëxamine your life.
Jared and Jimbo will tell you some things, sometimes.
